{"id":173,"date":"2021-04-16T09:22:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T13:22:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mallorynygard.com\/?p=173"},"modified":"2021-04-16T09:22:25","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T13:22:25","slug":"preservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mallorynygard.com\/?p=173","title":{"rendered":"Preservation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I pressed the azaleas between the pages<br>of a book on ancient Egyptian burial practices.<br>Mummified petals pulled wide by gravity<br>and rendered fragile by inattention.<\/p><p>Pressure and time make diamonds and oil,<br>but, add in my touch, and the blooming bushes<br>that wave from where the sidewalk ends<br>become light as lacewings.<\/p><p>The signs of spring I had broken off a branch<br>left an outline of mauve on the tomb picture;<br>ghosts of a day when I felt alive and killed<br>something growing to preserve that memory.<\/p><p>I cannot hold what I care about in these hands.<br><em>Fragile<\/em>, the intake nurse stamps my file. Better to be left<br>in the care of others than to take care of myself.
